Toxic Methanol in Hand Sanitizer

7 people accidentally swallowed hand sanitizer in Mexico recently, 3 people died and 1 person is permanently blind. It was reported that there was methanol in the hand sanitizer. It is worth noting that methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic.

FDA reminds the public:

Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and should not be used due to its toxic effects.

Besides, the FDA tested some hand sanitizers and found they contain toxic Menanol, so Mexican manufactures and their products were reported by FDA to the public. You may click here below to know more.

CDC recommend,

Consumers use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent ethanol (also referred to as ethyl alcohol).

As we know, 75% of alcohol hand sanitizer is effective in protecting us against COVID-19, and methanol and ethanol are variants of alcohol, but they are different.
– Methanol is a poisonous chemical derived through synthetic processes.
– Ethanol is produced by factory fermentation of food crops.

FDA added

Products that are fraudulently marketed as “FDA-approved” since there are NO hand sanitizers approved by FDA.

The reason is that the cost of methanol is lower than ethanol, that’s why some companies use methanol instead of ethanol in order to reduce costs. We only use USP and food-grade ethanol.
